So here we are again in the Milton Court Theatre for the first drama of the summer term, Peter Flannery’s ‘Burnt by the Sun’. Tech rehearsals started today and we’re in full flow with lighting, sound and automation cues being run. Director Joseph Blatchley is ably supported by professional designer Dora Schweitzer and Guildhall School student designers Jack Weir (lighting) and Erin Witton (sound). The play is set over one day in a Russian household in 1936 when the regime of Stalin is starting to take hold with repercussions felt across the country. Check out the photos below for an sneak peak into the production.

‘Burnt by the Sun’ is the upcoming drama due to open on the 26th May in the Milton Court Theatre here at Guildhall School. Directed by Joesph Blatchley and designed by Dora Schweitzer the creative team also includes two Theatre Technology students – Jack Weir as lighting designer and Erin Witton as sound designer.
The story and design includes an on-stage piano for which a number of prerecorded pieces need to be produced, so Erin and Rosie Stroud (Production Sound Engineer) arranged and engineered a recording session in the main Concert Hall here at Milton Court. The Performance Venues staff kindly supplied a wonderful 9 ft Steinway grand piano for the session (our thanks to Rob and Caitlin).
They were also very grateful to two pianists who came to be recorded – fellow TT student Rory Beaton (who will be operating the sound on the show as well) and Guildhall music student Sam Wilson.
In order for the actor who will play the pianist in the production to more convincingly mime to the recorded pieces a video camera was set up to record the performance so the actor can practice mimicking the hand movements of Rory and Sam.
Check out the photos below for a glimpse of the evening’s activities.

Once again the Technical Management team here at the Guildhall School are exploring new and exciting ways to utilise the automated flying systems we have here in the Milton Court and Silk Street venues. Our Technical Management Lecturer Simon Bond has supervised the Technical Theatre Arts students who are preparing and programming the system to move a ring (that will eventually be covered in lights) around the stage…”Here we are using four Stage Technologies BigTow winches to create an undulating effect using multi-target moves with a trigger. This effect will be used with the show ‘light ring’ with a singer in the middle and will run for ten minutes during Act 2 of the Opera Phaedra“. Thanks to Simon for the video and quote!
