So, last blog we were checking the sound and the mics, but now we’ve got the full band! And the actors get to sing and dance with their full accompaniment for the first time. It’s also a big day for the sound technical team as they have to ensure the orchestra pit is set up for the musicians with suitable chairs and music stands; all the right mics; foldback for the MD and musicians that need it (usually percussion and drums); and a camera on the conductor for front of house and backstage video monitoring! It’s no small job. Once the band have arrived the microphones have to be repositioned (they always get moved for some reason?) and in some cases (such as the strings) actually fitted to the instruments. George (year 3 sound mixer) and associate sound designer Mike Thacker then have to make the band sound its best through the auditorium PA, and also ensure that all the foldback (what the MD and actors need to hear backstage) is suitable and loud enough.
But the big thrill of the day is hearing the band in full swing (no pun intended) as they play through each number with the actors on stage singing along with them for the first time. It’s always an exciting and popular session to sit in and watch…it’s a shame it’s only once a year!
